Holbox Island

It is the northernmost island of Quintana Roo and home to a small fishing population that every dawn goes to sea to capture the wealth that the seas near Cabo Catoche harbor.

Rustic development

The village is rustic and friendly by sandy streets that are lined with palm-thatched huts and wooden houses. Small restaurants serve fresh seafood and visitors may find a place where they can play basketball, or be part of a party. There are cabins for rent and palapas tropical style, which are also rented along the beach. Low-impact tourism developments have begun; the lodging and food options are increasing

Encounter of oceans

Cabo Caloche is the northernmost point of the Peninsula do Yuuuán; There the waters of the Caribbean meet those of the Gulf of Mexico, giving rise to a spectacular mix of turquoises, aquamarines and jades. The combination of nutrient-rich ocean currents and cold-water coastal births make it possible to obtain excellent fishing, which the inhabitants of Holbox take advantage of by catching shrimp, shark, octopus and a great variety of fish.

The island boasts a narrow strip of thin sand ideal for sunbathing, walking and exploring the beach (countless varieties of shells are washed by the sea.

During the summer months the rare hawksbill turtle, which for years was chased to obtain its shell, and which today is protected by international laws, comes to spawn on the shores of the island.

A world of birds

Local fishermen rent botoes for excursions to the lagoon Yalahau or Conil nesting species of birds spatula rosada, frigates, osprey and occasional flocks of flamingos are some of the species that are observed during the tour, which is accompanied by dolphins. The Yalahau lagoon and its surroundings are part of the Yum Balam Reserve.

Other options are to visit the Rio Reserve

Lizards, to the west, on the coast of neighboring Yucatan, a boat trip through mangroves and a hike through the jungle to Boca Church and meet the ruins of a 16th century Spanish church, which is all that remains of an ephemeral garrison founded during the first expedition to conquer the Mayans.

Cabo Catoche and Boca Iglesia are located in the area that was part of Ekab, an important Maya cacicazgo and one of the first to be visited by the Spanish in 1517. In this area there are many archaeological sites not yet explored.
